A day in the life of… Shafique Dassu, Customer Support Engineer Shafique is Customer Support Engineer, based in our London office. Prior to joining the company, Shafique worked at miniPT. Fun fact: Last year Shafique backpacked across North Africa.
We were so happy to be back at Whitechapel Mission! It's our third time volunteering there and we're proud to support such an important cause. Members from our London team spent the morning sorting through donations, helping to ensure they get distributed to those who need them most. A huge thank you to everyone who joined in to make a difference! It's always a rewarding experience to give back to our community.
Welcome back! Q&As with… Lucas Borgna, Data Scientist Meet Lucas who returned to Vortexa as a Data Scientist. We wanted to find out why Lucas decided to come back, how he found his return and what he enjoys the most about the company.
Q&A with Marie Bates, Lead Data Analyst Marie studied shipping at university in Liverpool where her masters was in maritime operations. Whilst studying someone asked her where she wanted to work when she finished. She said that she would work for Lloyd’s List and she did so for 23 years. In that time, she became a sales manager, chief researcher for Lloyd’s Shipping Economist and the editor of Lloyds Maritime Directory. But, she really wanted to analyse shipping data. In 2000 she joined the Analysis of Petroleum Exports team (APEX). Her job was to track oil and gas tankers globally. This was prior to AIS which was available from 2007, the same year she took over as manager of the team. She became the primary contact for clients, fixing their systems, queries, creating new products and services, and data quality. Two notable milestones for her were creating a report that she was told couldn’t be done and rebuilding the APEX backend. Fun fact: ‘I won a week’s holiday to St. Lucia for the report I created – the one that couldn’t be done. Everything booked, passports, dog sitter booked. Then, COVID happened – Ah well, it would have been nice!’ We wanted to find out what inspired Marie to join Vortexa, what some of her biggest milestones have been to date and what day-to-day life really looks like for the Lead Data Analyst…

Ayesha is an Economics and Politics graduate. She began her career at Natwest before moving to Virgin Money, and incredibly was able to study for her degree alongside these roles. Before joining Vortexa in 2024, Ayesha joined S&P on their graduate programme, before focusing on their financial institutions book of business. Fun fact: Ayesha owned a talking parrot as a child. A day in the life of… Ramanan Sivasubramanian, Senior Site Reliability Engineer Ramanan is as a Senior Site Reliability Engineer at Vortexa, based in our Singapore office. Prior to joining Vortexa Ramanan worked at TikTok. Before that he had worked across Big-Tech and startups. Fun fact: Ramanan is an Indian language enthusiast.
A day in the life of… Liam McEvoy, Product Specialist Liam is a London native, reading History at the University of Birmingham. His professional journey began at the ICE, where he gained valuable experience in energy and commodity derivatives. Currently, Liam serves as a Product Specialist here at Vortexa. Before joining the company, he worked as an oil derivatives broker at TP ICAP, further honing his expertise in the industry. Fun fact: Liam once busked on a road trip from New York to LA, playing guitar! He learnt a valuable lesson in real estate in Nashville, when paid more for his spot on the street than for the music he was playing!
