We're closing out National Mentoring Month by recognizing the role mentorship can play in career shifts at Citizens. Kelsi, a Human Resources Associate, shares what it meant to have a mentor: "A mentor changed everything for me. I reached the point in my career where I was starting to feel ‘the itch’ to change. I'm not an extrovert, which meant discovering new people and networking can be challenging. But our Citizens Talent Matters tool made it easy to pair with a mentor, who ended up being someone in my department, but with whom I had never worked with before. I'm so glad I took this step. My mentor helped me explore entirely new perspectives and ways of thinking. I was questioning everything - in a good way - and felt myself embracing a lot more ‘outside-the-box’ thinking. It was so refreshing (and a confidence boost!) to get feedback in real time as I made progress exploring what's next in my career. I not only found clarity in where I wanted to go next and what I wanted out of a role, but also what skills I should continue to develop to stay relevant in a changing landscape." See how we're helping our colleagues grow in any direction their talents and curiosity take them all year long!

January is made for resolutions, manifestations….and National Mentoring Month! It’s a great time to explore new ideas for personal and professional development. At Citizens, mentorship comes in many forms, all fostering a strong connection to help you learn new skills or sharpen existing ones. Lisa M., our New York Retail Banking Director, has advice to make mentorship happen for you: 1. If the answer to any of the below questions is yes, then finding a mentor could be right for you. Do you want to: • Make a career change? • Improve your leadership skills? • Broaden your exposure to another business line? • Work on feedback? 2. Go out and meet people. Share your intentions with your manager so they can support you. See if your company has Business/Employee Resource Groups. Take advantage of any learning and development programming your company has to offer. The more exposure you have to colleagues across the organization, the easier it will be to find someone who has the experience that matches where you’d like to grow. 3. Make the ask. When you find a possible mentor, be specific about your expectations. Talk about why you think that person would make an ideal mentor to you, and what your engagement model would look like together - do you meet in person? On the phone? Offer what you think the mentor can get out of the relationship, too. After all, these relationships are intended to be mutually beneficial!
