A huge thank you to Hilary Franz, Washington’s Commissioner of Public Lands, Rachel Pasternack, Global Lead, Forests & Climate, for The Nature Conservancy, and our own Paul Hossain, VP of Natural Resources and Climate Solutions, and Ara Erickson, VP of Corporate Sustainability, for bringing the public, conservation and private perspectives together for an engaging panel discussion at the Bloomberg Green Festival about how we can leverage our different forests, landscapes and objectives to deliver natural climate solutions at scale. Commissioner Franz might have summed it up best: “My one wish would be that we would stop fighting over forests and starting fighting for our forests — and in fighting for our forests recognize that everybody has value in their opinions and their experience and where they’re coming from, and that we will go faster the sooner we don’t look at each other as enemies.” #naturalclimatesolutions
Our Lower Columbia team recently donated a 20-ton load of Douglas-fir and maple logs to the Oregon Zoo. Sustainably harvested from Scappoose, Ore., these logs will provide opportunities for the zoo’s polar bears and orangutans to climb, play and engage socially within their habitats. When the logs are placed, two of the first animal residents to enjoy the new features will be the Oregon Zoo’s beloved polar bear, Nora, and Jolene, a 2-year old orangutan. "We’re excited to play a role in Nora and Jolene’s enrichment and provide them an opportunity to explore new materials from right here in Oregon,” says Steve Keniston, Lower Columbia area manager.

"Over time, I’ve realized one of the most rewarding parts of my job is accomplishing projects and tasks with other people," says forester Maria Erdmann, who has worked on our Vail tree farm in Washington since 1994. "Silviculture has seasons, and at the end of each seasonal project I enjoy the sense of camaraderie and accomplishment we share with both our Weyerhaeuser team members and the contractors who helped us complete our projects successfully." For her commitment to sustainability, innovation and people development, Maria was awarded a 2023 Truly Great Award.
Brad Moehlmann, a Creswell resident and Southern Oregon Region Forester for Weyerhaeuser, is one of five employees across the United States and Canada to be honored with our Volunteer of the Year award. Over the past two years, he’s worked with the career and technical education programs at Sheldon High School in Eugene and Thurston High School in Springfield, Ore., to build curriculum about modern sustainable forestry and provide students with a firsthand look at what it’s like to work in the industry. We’re grateful for Brad’s work engaging the next generation of forest professionals!
For Laura Ramirez Q., describing her position as a biometrician with Weyerhaeuser's Quantitative Systems & Inventory team is pretty simple. "I tell people I work for a company that manages forests so we can have all the wood products we need — and that one of the most important aspects of that work is sustainability," Laura says. "If we want to satisfy the increasing demand for wood in a sustainable manner, we have to manage our forests so they’ll be healthy and productive for future generations." Each fire season, wildland firefighters risk their lives to protect our forests and communities. Weyerhaeuser recognizes the impact these fires can have on the mental health of first responders and their families and the critical need to address mental health challenges without stigma. We’ve partnered with Firefighter Behavioral Health Alliance to raise awareness and provide an online resource hub designed for wildland firefighters through our #FightingFiresTogether campaign, now in its third year. Please share this resource to help support those who keep us safe: https://lnkd.in/dFG9qVdm
Weyerhaeuser has partnered with renewable energy developers for more than 15 years to identify opportunities and support the development of wind energy projects on our land. Today, six wind projects are operational across our timberlands, including the Skookumchuck Wind Project, which began operations in 2020 as our first wind project in the West. These wind projects demonstrate how working forests provide multiple climate solutions, including helping meet the growing demand for renewable energy. #theweyerhaeuserway #naturalclimatesolutions
We envision a future where everyone has access to a quality, affordable home and are proud to be partnering with Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design at University of Arkansas on a new research fellows program. The program includes two simultaneous applied research and design projects at the U of A — one focused on prototyping a 3D-printed, wood-composite house, the other on engineering mass timber to support three common housing typologies important to rural communities. #innovation #TheWeyerhaeuserWay #architecture Learn more at: https://lnkd.in/gRhzvCbz
Our working forests remove millions of tons of CO2 from the atmosphere every year, providing a ready and scalable climate change solution. In some locations, we're able to enhance those benefits by developing high-quality forest carbon projects that remove and store even more CO2, or by supporting the development of renewable energy projects that provide clean, efficient energy. It's all part of how we’re delivering climate solutions through our working forests. #TheWeyerhaeuserWay #naturalclimatesolutions
