On June 19th in the United States, we celebrate Juneteenth. What does this holiday signify? For Kelly E. Navies, Museum Specialist of Oral History at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, when considering what Juneteenth means: “I like to think of Juneteenth as a celebration of freedom, of family, and of joy that emerged from this cauldron of the [Civil War]. After hundreds of years of enslavement, and the intense post-Civil War era, all of these emotions and feelings had built up to a particular point. Then, [American] General Granger arrives [in Texas] with his troops, some of whom were members of the United States Colored troops, to announce that they will enforce the Emancipation Proclamation. We know this wasn’t news to these enslaved people. There were channels through which they had heard about the Emancipation Proclamation, but there was nothing that they could do without the Union troops to enforce it. So, now they're able to enjoy this moment and recognize what they've come through.” Juneteenth serves as a reminder of the work our nation must do to achieve equality and justice for all. At Rimkus, we’re committed to providing a safe, inclusive, and equal environment for our team members.

As Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month comes to a close, we would like to highlight several members of these communities who have made significant contributions to society through art and architecture. Kapulani Landgraf: Born in Hawaii in 1966, Landgraf is a Native Hawaiian artist whose work is based in black and white photography but also encompasses pieces in other media, including sculpture and installation. Her work draws on Hawaiian cultural traditions, storytelling, and the native Hawaiian language. I.M. Pei: Born in Guangzhou, China in 1917, Pei came to the US in 1935 to study architecture at the University of Pennsylvania. Among his many famous architectural designs are the John F. Kennedy Memorial Library in Boston, the glass pyramid at the Louvre in France, and the city hall of Dallas, Texas. Ruth Asawa: Born in California in 1926 to Japanese immigrants, Asawa is best known for her work in wire sculpture and large-scale public art located in spaces in San Francisco and San Jose. Fred Ho: Born in California in 1957, Ho was a saxophonist and composer who wrote operas, suites, oratorios, and ballets that mixed jazz with other musical styles and took inspiration from revolutionary feminism, Chinese folklore, and his personal experience.
