Yesterday, more than a hundred of care site leaders, clinical staff and advisory council members came together for the third annual OhioHealth Rural Health Symposium.    It’s a time for our organization to reflect on the current state and future challenges of maintaining local care in the state’s rural communities.   This year’s event focused on sharing the OhioHealth Rural Health whitepaper – which outlines disparities in rural areas and proposes strategies to enhance access, care delivery and workforce development. From there, a panel discussion and breakout sessions dived further into implementing these strategies locally.

This past weekend, more than 250 associates participated in the Stonewall Columbus Pride March & Festival – a colorful display of the inclusive care, values and workplace we stand behind. We believe in putting pride into practice at our care sites and in our communities. Whether you identify as LGBTQIA+ or you’re an ally, OhioHealth promotes a safe space where all associates and patients are welcomed for who they are.

Leadership lessons can be found all around us, especially in the sports and entertainment industry. That was a key focus of yesterday’s OhioHealth Leadership Briefing (OLB) – a day where we bring together our leaders from across the healthcare system to connect, celebrate and learn. In a dynamic conversation moderated by Columbus Blue Jackets' TV color analyst and team ambassador Jody Shelley, Columbus Blue Jackets GM Don Waddell and Columbus Crew GM Issa Tall shared powerful insights about leading teams, shaping culture and serving the customer. Memorable takeaways included: + You don’t need a certain title to be a leader. + The first interaction with your customer is the most important – so view your staff as jigsaw puzzle where each piece is equally important to completing that puzzle. This human-centered leadership approach is best for not only your people, but the customer. + It’s critical to build a culture that supersedes language barriers, draws strength by listening to its people and delivers the same respect and recognition to associates no matter their tenure. + Identify when you should pass on talent. When someone is not a culture fit, seek another candidate who will be a better team player.

OhioHealth strives to be a leader in sustainability. And this Earth Day, we’re proud to announce the organization has received the prestigious Joint Commission Sustainable Healthcare Certification. As the first health system in Ohio to earn this certification, it not only demonstrates our dedication to environmental stewardship, but also aligns with our climate pledge to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

Sawubona – the zulu greeting meaning “I see you”. This one word resonated through our International Women’s Day event last week. Hosted by the WE L.E.A.D. BRG, an associate-led group that supports the diverse needs of all women at OhioHealth, this signature event empowered attendees to help others feel seen and valued. Thank you to keynote speaker Toshia Safford, President and CEO at The Center for Healthy Families, for bringing this community together with such a powerful message.
