On June 6th, we broke ground on our first-ever new construction project in Nevada, a 90,000-square-foot medical office building located in the southwest valley of Las Vegas. The new facility will bring primary care and several specialty care services to one location and feature a linear accelerator, infusion center, and healing garden for patients. “Intermountain Health is elevating the quality of healthcare delivered in southern Nevada,” said Mitchell Cloward, president of Intermountain Health’s Desert Region, which covers southwest Utah and southern Nevada. “Our caregivers serve our patients and communities with compassion, respect, and kindness as they carry out our mission of helping patients live the healthiest lives possible. This begins with access to affordable, preventative care that aims to simplify our patients’ interactions with healthcare while making it more convenient.” Services that will be offered at the new facility will include pediatrics, women’s health, radiation and oncology, adult primary care, and senior primary care. It will be located at the intersection of West Badura Avenue and South Agilysys Way in the fast-growing southwest area in Clark County.

iAct, our caregiver volunteer impact match program, is designed to support our communities by encouraging our caregivers to get involved and give back. For every hour our caregivers volunteer, they earn 16 community cash points, and each community cash point is the equivalent of $1. Nine years ago, Josh Swires joined Good Samaritan Hospital in Lafayette, CO as a new graduate bedside nurse on the Med/Surg Oncology floor. Since then, he has worked his way up to manager of the Emergency Department by taking advantage of Intermountain Health’s education opportunities. “Intermountain offers so many growth and development opportunities that I highly recommend anyone interested in a leadership position take advantage of,” said Josh. “I’m finishing up a leadership development course offered through Intermountain and have taken advantage of the PEAK education assistance to help pay my tuition. Intermountain is very invested in helping its caregivers develop and grow and there are so many ways we can use these opportunities to become better caregivers and individuals so we can continue to provide the best possible care to our patients.” Intermountain continues to invest in education opportunities so it’s easier for our caregivers to invest in themselves. Our caregivers have access to many ways to grow their skills or earn degrees, including debt-free degree partnerships, up-front tuition assistance through PEAK, tuition reimbursement, free access to online classes through Udemy, and internal development programs, as well as help planning their career path through coaching, mentoring, and the Navigating Your Development class. Dr. Marcela Serrano, Peaks Region medical director of primary care, is not just a doctor, she's a visionary advocate for Latina empowerment. With a fervent dedication to breaking down barriers, she's taking part in initiatives to encourage Latina girls to pursue higher education. Through these efforts, she's not only transforming individual lives but also shaping a brighter future for entire communities. Recently, Dr. Serrano presented at Latina Village, an annual event focused on developing leaders, elevating the voices of Latinas, and increasing the number of successful Latina professionals and entrepreneurs who graduate college. Dr. Serrano shared her personal journey as a graduate of the University of Chihuahua School of Medicine in Mexico. She obtained her specialty in family medicine in Las Cruces, New Mexico, and has a subspecialty in gynecology from the University of Illinois in Peoria. She joined legacy SCL Health in 2012 and stayed until 2017. After working for Denver Health, she rejoined the organization in 2019. Dr. Serrano said if she could give one piece of advice to Latina girls it would be persistence and networking. She explained how as a female minority, doors don’t always open as easily, so you must try over and over again. “I always tell people that if someone tells you no, ask why, and really listen to their feedback because it will only help you improve and get you closer to the goals you’ve set for yourself,” she said.
