EmblemHealth employees joined the recent Breakthrough T1D Walk at Turtle Back Zoo in West Orange, New Jersey, helping raise awareness and hundreds of dollars to support those living with Type 1 diabetes. “Spending the day at the Turtle Back Zoo to support Breakthrough T1D offered us the opportunity to promote EmblemHealth’s dedication to the communities we serve, which includes those living with Type 1 diabetes,” said Chief Compliance Officer Debra Lightner. “As an individual supporter of Breakthrough T1D who has friends and family members touched by Type 1 diabetes, I was heartened that my company saw the worthiness of this organization and offered us the opportunity to participate in this very unique event.” Thank you to everyone who stepped up and walked with us.

In collaboration with the Partnership for New York City and NYC Public Schools, EmblemHealth welcomed students from Franklin D. Roosevelt High School in Brooklyn for a day of exposure to careers across the health care and insurance landscape. Students engaged directly with leaders from a diverse cross section of the organization in Q&A, posed quirky and insightful questions, and worked in teams to address real-world challenges. Their ideas were thoughtful and centered on how to expand access to care for people in their community. What stood out was their curiosity and strong sense of teamwork. The students approached each conversation and challenge with enthusiasm, and a refreshing sense of humor. The future of health care depends on voices like these. In honor of Black History Month we asked EmblemHealth colleagues to tell us about someone from history who has inspired them. Audrey Britton chose Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm: Shirley Chisholm was the first Black woman elected to the United States Congress, proudly representing my hometown of Brooklyn, New York. She later became the first Black person and the first woman to seek the presidential nomination of a major political party. These achievements were groundbreaking, but what I admire most is not simply what she accomplished but how she led. She entered institutions that were never built with her in mind and refused to shrink herself for acceptance. Throughout her career, she amplified the voices of those too often overlooked even when doing so cost her politically. Her leadership was rooted in principle, not convenience. Chisholm’s life teaches us that progress does not come from waiting for permission. It comes from the courage to step forward, claim space, and widen it for others. As she so powerfully said, “If there is not a seat at the table, bring a folding chair.” As I reflect on her legacy, I’m reminded of my own responsibility to carry that spirit into the work I do: to speak truthfully, lead boldly, and create space where it did not previously exist. At a recent Winter Wonderland food and toy distribution event at our Neighborhood Care location in Jackson Heights, more than 1,100 toys and 300 bags of food were distributed to local families as part of our $2 million investment in food security across the five boroughs. Roseline Walker-Blackman, Director, Medicaid Care Management joined the volunteer team, helping distribute bags of produce and connecting with neighbors. As she shared: "Being face to face with families, rather than behind a screen, was a powerful reminder of why this work matters. Seeing kids light up as they chose toys and families receive groceries warmed my heart. I was grateful to be part of something that brings comfort and hope during the holiday season. At the recent City Harvest Mobile Market in Sunset Park, more than 1,000 New Yorkers received fresh, nutritious produce through a program supported by EmblemHealth as part of our $2 million investment in food security across the five boroughs. These markets are helping reduce one of the biggest barriers to health: access to healthy food. Our Chief People Officer Bill Voigt, joined the volunteer team, helping distribute bags of produce and connecting with neighbors. As he shared: “I’m always reminded how meaningful our work is when I’m out in the community. Events like the mobile market show what it looks like when we step beyond the office and serve, offering peace of mind, a nutritious meal, and a human connection to those who need it most.
