High school students in Union County, Oregon had a chance to learn about jobs in the timber industry and forest sustainability. The event was hosted by Hagedorn Logging and Manulife. One memorable moment was the opportunity to travel to an active logging site and see how it all works. This opportunity was made possible by Boise Cascade associates in Elgin, Oregon who partnered with the Oregon Department of Forestry for their Northeast District’s fourth annual Jobs in the Woods Day. During lunch, students attended a presentation about wildland firefighting where they met current wildland fire fighters, heard about the experiences of wildland fighting, and learned about career opportunities. Following lunch, students toured Elgin’s Plywood Mill where they learned about the process of wood procurement and manufacturing. Kaden Titus, Elgin’s Wood Procurement Manager, and Mike Kreachbaum, Log Buyer, were involved in this year’s partnership and mill tour. This event introduced multiple career options to the students in the timber and manufacturing industry. The students learned how trees are chosen, logged, transported to a mill, and how they are manufactured into products they use. It was an inspirational experience for everyone involved.
