Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton may be a big cheese in the Big Apple, but the law firm also has made a name for itself in the international arena. Cleary Gottlieb's attorneys work from about a dozen offices scattered across the globe and are known for their work in such practice areas as corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions, litigation, and intellectual property. The firm boasts about 1,100 attorneys, with almost half of those based outside the US. Representative clients have included British Airways, Deutsche Telekom, Nortel, and other international corporations. The firm was founded in 1946 by former Root Clark Buckner partners George Cleary, Leo Gottlieb, Fowler Hamilton, and Mel Steen.
