Great talk with the HR representative. Great intro talk with one of the potential team members, in which we discussed what was the team's focus areas, what tech and methods they use, but also what they don't do - great informative talk. Next a talk with the hiring manager who was nitpicking on such small irrelevant details that it bordered on condescension. They challenged my bachelor + master degrees as a fit for this position, despite 6+ years of relevant working experience and 9 overall, all the while my degrees laid solid ground for my current career. They followed with questions related to advanced topics, to which I provided correct answers, but topics which the previous team member explicitly said were not in the focus of the team. Very unpleasant experience in this call, it seemed they took pleasure in demonstrating a lack of fit rather than talk about the role itself, the team and the match between their real needs and my relevant skills and experience. A call with a Codility test (passed) and some further questions based on showcasing some Zalando web pages followed. The previous team member and another of their colleagues were present. The discussion about the Zalando pages was absolutely cringe-worthy. Questions were fired continuously like it was a TV game-show, and while most of my answers were on point, some were impossible to know without having prior business/product knowledge. But the "BEST" part was being scolded on a teacher-pupil like tone for missing that Zalando has localized pages for their different markets. Dude, are you for real?! If this is how you evaluate candidates' skills, you are doing a very poor job at it. Tone should also be respectful, especially when the interviewer is younger than the candidate. Better make a take-home test out of it and you shall receive a thought-through approach. I was writing an email the coming day to the HR representative to let them know I am not interested in continuing the process when I received their email letting me know they will not move forward. At least we agreed on something :) Since then I have been asked by two former colleagues to apply to open roles in their teams. I refuse outright to subject myself to further potential condescending interviewers. Their process is well structured but the people have an oversized ego. It is also a known secret that they orient themselves towards hiring from overseas, as overseas professionals will turn a blind eye to such behaviors and accept lower payments in order to have the opportunity of working in the EU.
