The interview was very straight forward and informal. I was referred to the hiring manager by two of our mutual close friends and colleagues. I coordinated a time to speak with him via email. We soon met for coffee by the Year Up office. He seemed impressed and quickly asked that I send him a sample of my project management skills and my rate. I obliged. Soon after he asked for references. Shortly after contacting them, he called me and gave me the offer.
Since I have integrity and he was a personal connection, I chose to be honest and tell him I was waiting on another position and would need a week to get back to him. (It would not be fair to our mutual friends to start a job and quit soon after.) He said that would be fine and that he understood as his offer was part-time, contract work. I never got the other offer and quickly replied to the hiring manager to tell him that I accepted his offer.
I expected either a yes or a friendly no. I got neither. Hiring manager never responded to my emails or calls. He did not have the decency to treat me like a human being, much less a close friend of his colleagues. I doubt a lack of common decency makes for a good boss.
