This was definitely the most impersonal interview I have ever experienced. I received an email asking me to participate in a virtual panel interview with 4 individuals. There was no prescreening with a recruiter or HR. I accepted. The interview instructions were clear that I needed to have a working web camera and make sure it was on during the interview. So naturally I was taken aback when 3 of the 4 panelists did not turn on their cameras for the entire interview, nor did they engage with the interview process at all. All I saw were black squares with their names. Other than introducing themselves at the beginning, they did not speak or ask any questions. The only person who spoke was the one facilitating the interview (fortunately they did turn their camera on). It was obvious that they were just reading from a generic canned list of questions. Very basic behavioral-type questions you could find anywhere online. It felt very robotic and very bizarre. They rarely asked me to elaborate on answers that I gave nor asked any follow-up questions. I got the sense that they probably already had someone they planned to hire and were not actually considering me as a candidate but rather wasting my time conducting a CYA interview so they could meet their quota and say they did actively recruit for the role. I sent a thank you note all the same after the interview was over and have not heard from anyone since. Y-12 has a great reputation for being a good place to work, but after that interview, I'm not sure I would accept the position even if it was offered. It was just overall a very negative experience and did not leave me with a good impression of the people or the team I would be working with. Interviews are supposed to be a 2-way street. Your candidates are trying to determine if they want to work for your company as well. The very least you can do is turn on your camera.
