At my previous company, we created a partnership with Verkada. It was beneficial, and we had good collaboration. I was involved with GTM and created a joint solution brief. Fast forward to the present, I am seeking a new role. I reached out to my connection who is in a leadership position and informed him that I’m applying for a role in his team. I was surprised by the lack of acknowledgment despite a positive past partnership. This is concerning and raises doubts about the company's internal culture.

The interviewer (Senior Manager of Product Marketing) was late to the interview and proceeded to attempt to interrogate me with a series of repetitive questions that really had no direct connection to the job responsibility itself. Her attitude was curt and dismissive and once you get to talking about the product, you realize that she has zero understanding of how marketing works, and not a lot of technical knowledge (quite surprising) of what the competition is like. She would repeat basic information listed on their own website when I asked for further clarification. After I finished answering all of her questions, and when it was my turn to ask questions, I asked about how they market their solutions knowing that their potential clients would have already considered Verkada's product weaknesses versus competitor solutions. She paused for one second and said, "Actually, I would like you to answer that instead." And when she did answer my other simple questions, her answers to all the other questions were quite vague as well and it does feel like the bulk of the workload in the marketing teams is definitely being carried by other teams and other members.

Long but fair interview process. First an initial interview with recruiter, then conversation with head of product marketing department. After conversation, there was a 1.5 hour timed writing exam where candidates need to write a mock customer success story. After passing, there was an on-site interview where candidates needed to prepare a go-to market strategy presentation and present it in front of a panel that included PMMs and product managers, followed by 30-45 minute conversations with each. Overall a challenging but fair interview process.
