Go online and fill out an application. Waited about a month for an invitation to an interview at North Platte, NE. After being told that I had an excellent interview by Kevin Forrest on the 23rd of October 2018, I felt very confident and happy at possibly having a career, not just a job, with Union Pacific. Then, at the conclusion of the interview, I was told to expect an email offer within 'a couple of days'. That didn't happen. I did follow up the following week as a proactive measure to show my eagerness to acquire my new career. Within 30 minutes of my phone call, I received a very blunt email directing me to the career portal which simply showed I was no longer considered for the position. Wow. I was told a great interview had taken place, and then bait-and-switched to a blunt 'sorry, we don't like you as an employee'. What a crude, and rude way to show potential employees the cordial and considerate way of doing business with new employees. I have 23+ years of experience working outdoors, all shifts, and operating heavy equipment, with NO days off or missed, and an excellent driving record, with no criminal history. Yet, they don't hire people with these credentials. It sure seems like either my age (49) or my slim appearance played a part in this denial. Either that, or else UP is hiring only people who KNOW a railroader. It seems that UP doesn't want good, hardworking employees who don't miss days off work, and have no criminal history, and who possess skills relevant to the job as Train Crew.
