I had phone interview and I am not quite impress with the interview process. Here are some pitfalls -
- I had applied for Agile Iteration Manager role. I got a phone interview setup and towards the end of the interview, I was considered for Tech Lead role. Weird part is, even though in the email, Agile Manager position was mentioned.
- Tech Lead role was for .Net developer. I have been working with front end technologies like Angular and Backbone in recent years. I did .net 5 years ago. However, recruiter - a non-technical guy - continue to ask me .net questions and wrote down my answers. I see two issues with it. 1) Any strong developer will not get answers correct for technologies he/she hasn't used in years. Instead, focus on questions based on the recent experience or for a Tech Lead role, focus on leadership skills. 2) I strongly feel technical interview is not a right fit for non-tech guy because they can't make a best judgement if candidate can't provide the exact answer.
It was clear from my resume that I haven't use these technologies in years so either don't consider such candidates or ask them right questions based on their strength and what they will bring to the table.
I am sure Ultimate Software is one of the best companies out there based on the reviews here and they also make exciting products (of course, that's why I applied for a position there). However, my interview experience wasn't impressive.
