This was by far the worst interview process I've ever been a part of. The HR team should be ashamed of how they treat candidates and if their HR team is any indication of how the company operates then this is an ignorant, slow, sloppy place run by children. Not only was the process terrible, but the people I interviewed with here were terribly rude and had a lot of EGO which is surprising since they make a big show in their core values talking about how there's "no ego". They place a lot of emphasis is placed on silly things like free lunches, their constantly in demolition mode office space (which smells rancid btw) and doing things the "toast" way versus building a quality technical product. Many of the people I met with werent as savvy as I would expect. I mentioned that the management team i met with was rude and I cannot find a more accurate word. They're clearly drinking their own kool-aid and have no consideration for people; constantly interupting candidates after asking them a question is no way to conduct an interview. I'm sorry, but all the free bread and company parties in the world are not enough to work at this place.

We appreciate you taking the time to detail your experience interviewing at Toast and I would like to apologize on behalf of the organization for leaving you with such a bad taste in your mouth. We take our core values seriously and if they are not being met or exemplified by all of our team then we clearly have some work to do. I would welcome a discussion directly with you to better understand some of the specifics around your experience. Please feel free to reach out to me directly at smatheson@toasttab.com. Regarding the office space, I agree that the continuous renovation can be difficult (I live in it every day) to look at. Sometimes the allure of a historic building leads to unfortunate consequence in renovations, but with our growth (I’m sure we can agree growth is a good thing) it’s very necessary and will conclude soon leaving us with a very bright and inviting space. Again, I invite you to please reach out to discuss in more detail.

Leetcode style 1 hr technical along with 1 hr behavioral with pretty standard questions. Interviewers were both really nice and hardest part of technical were the follow-up questions but the interviewer was very helpful.

Overall, the interview experience was good, with questions ranging from a moderate to slightly challenging level. There were a total of four rounds, and the difficulty progressively increased with each stage. The initial rounds focused on fundamental concepts and gradually moved toward more in-depth problem-solving and advanced topics in later rounds. This progression allowed for a structured evaluation of both core understanding and the ability to handle complex scenarios.
