I initially applied for a 2D artist role listed in Palo Alto. I had a phone screen with a recruiter in which I provided details of my background in exchange for a brief rundown of the responsibilities. I also explicitly stated that I wished only to be considered for the Palo Alto office.
After the call, I received an email stating that I would be a better fit for the Motion Designer position along with a test tailored to that role. After completing the test I am notified that the next step would be a video call with the 'LA design team'. I thought to myself that it was strange for a role based in Palo Alto but didn't rule out the possibility that perhaps the company is forming a new team there. During the call the question comes up as to whether I'm willing to relocate to LA. I told them that it wasn't in the cards and the interview essentially wraps up following another two or three questions.
In essence, it was a waste of both parties' time and I was basically applying for a job that didn't exist. A bit of advice: relay the information a candidate provides in the initial phone screen.
