A brief zoom call with a recruiter a few days after I applied discussing the role and my experience. She briefly asked was I okay eating with patients to which I responded yes. After the call with the recruiter the on-site interview was scheduled with the hiring manager and BHT manager. The hiring manager was not very friendly and overall seemed pretty disinterested in my interview. Halfway through the BHT manager informed me that staff are required to eat breakfast and lunch with the patients. I informed them, like I informed the recruiter, that I am vegetarian. I also prefer to stay away from eggs and dairy when possible. They could barely tell me what alternatives their cafeteria has available for vegetarian staff/patients or how they handle certain food preferences. The hiring manager did not seem keen on my personal food choices whatsoever. It seems like requirement and lack of flexibility surrounding it goes against what the company should stand for. I also found it interesting that he admitted that the food in the cafeteria was nasty. I am positive that this rule of theirs is why they are always hiring. A few days after the on-site interview I received an automated email that I was not selected for the position. I am sure it is because I expressed my personal food choices. Recruiters should be more upfront over the screening call about just how much is expected when they say “eating with patients” so that they do not waste applicants time. They showed me the menu and these are not quick meals, full on meals with multiple sides that you are expected to eat twice a day multiple times a week.
