Interviews are used as a way to be vetted and placed in the pool of associates available for potential deployments. Interviews take place over a couple of rounds to discuss the role and opportunities with other SMA associates within the practice that is targeted. Interviewers test on area-specific knowledge and give an opportunity to ask questions about roles, clients, and consulting in general. Once the couple of rounds of interviews are complete, there is a final talk with a practice lead or higher executive. If successful, you're either available to be deployed, or in the case that there is a specific deployment right off the bat, you begin to get set up for a client site.
