      Entretien pour Consultant

      Candidature

J'ai postulé via la recommandation d'un employé. Le processus a pris 2 mois. J'ai passé un entretien chez Propeller (San Francisco, CA) en avr. 2019

      Entretien

The interview process at Propeller was fair, thorough, well-organized, and covered items from firm culture and fit to assessing general consulting skills, technical skills, and experience. It consisted of 4 interviews total, and the timeline from application submission to offer letter was just over 2 months, aligning similarly with other consulting firms around the Bay Area in my experience. Interview 1 was by phone, largely a ‘fit’ discussion, and very conversational. The interviewer was engaging, upbeat and personable, and we talked through items that spanned from my experience to my hobbies and interests. Interview 2 was in person with a director in downtown SF. The interviewer was super friendly, and the discussion dived deeper into my background and work experience. We also talked through high-level case questions related to client service, technology challenges, change management concerns, etc. Interview 3 was by conference call with a director based out of Portland. The bulk of the interview was around case discussions related to technological changes, firm strategy, change management, and project management, and was more extensive and detailed than the prior interview’s case. The discussion was overall interactive and engaging. Interview 4 was an in person case study in the SF office, presented to two Propeller consultants. The case was deliberately ambiguous, and centered around a firm undergoing ambitious growth while attempting to manage related challenges. I was given 1.5 hours to prep and white boards to showcase a response and facilitate discussion. The case was presented over the course of an hour in a mock client/consultant presentation. The simulated case felt authentic, I was asked good questions, the discussion evolved organically, and was challenging yet enjoyable. I was impressed with everyone I interacted with through the interview process, and felt that Propeller’s screening looked for skills, experience, and quality of person/fit with equal importance. Propeller employees seem to have a very diverse set of professional experiences, positive attitudes, and were all easy to get along with. Overall, a great experience.

Either the interviewers are liars, hypocrites, or both. The company is lost and can't offer competitive market rates. I crushed all four interviews and case studies. They tried very hard to find something wrong with my answers, but fell short and floundered. Just like what the other interviewees stated on this site, they will ask if you want feedback and then ghost you.

      Question 1

      1. A company has missed deadlines, and vendors and leadership relationships are fractured. How would you fix it.

Exactly as described on their website. Prompt to send scheduling invites and quick follow up after first 2 rounds. Follow up from 3rd round took about 10 days and they declined to bring me in for a case study. The first 3 interviews seemed to go very well, so I was surprised. The “decline” email invited me to reply if I wanted to ask for specific feedback. Since the decline took me by surprise, I really wanted the feedback, so I replied right away and asked for insights on where I fell short. Still no response a month later. That’s disappointing because they invited the request for feedback, and because it seemed like they tried to foster a culture of feedback to drive continuous improvement. The lack of response leaves me with a less favorable impression of the firm than when I started the process.

      Question 1

Asked about how I handle feedback and an example of something I’ve worked on improving based on feedback.

Interviews were overly structured and largely unpersonal - difficult to connect with anyone on a personal level. The questions were very generic and surprisingly not well aligned to the role applied for. Talking points between interviewers around needs and the role were disconnected and confusing. The work put into the business case turned out to not be a good use of time.

How would you close the gap between customer research and the platform decision - ensuring those insights are incorporated into any technology investments?
