It was based on my ability to articulate a vision for the technology. After talking with the inventor and the University that owned the technology I had to present a plan that was acceptable to them. In the end I was able to negotiate a significant equity package as the cash compensation was significantly lower than I was used to. But on the end if I can do my job and execute effectively, the equity is worth far more tan any cash compensation would be.
