      Initial phone call with recruiter to get a general sense of candidate and company. Was told some of the next steps by this recruiter should candidacy move forward, that one is a technical interview on the topic to be taught and then a sample teaching session. I specifically asked at this point in time, if for the sample teaching, I would be provided teaching materials, since it is a teaching position and not instructional design/developing materials. I was told that I would be provided their materials to teach from. Technical interview asked some general and specific questions about the domain I was to teach, example of how to handle typical classroom issues. Nothing too difficult or tricky, even when the domain was something that I was certified in a long time ago and they were accommodating about using older terminology. Where the interview process totally fell apart was when they asked me to conduct a sample teaching session. I agreed to do so and then I asked how/when I would be provided teaching materials. I was now told that I would have to create the teaching and demonstration materials. I replied back at this point that I was no longer interested in working with them since their "story" changed from the initial contact: 1) The amount of work being requested was not trivial having to setup a "lab environment" for the topic, building out slide deck, etc. In the back of my mind was that it almost seems as if maybe they did not have the course actually put together and I was going to be working for free to build this module out for them since they changed their mind about providing me the materials 2) My significant other was teaching a different subject for a competitor who definitely has their act together. They provided her THEIR teaching materials for her teaching assessment. That is what I was told and expected. 3) It makes no sense to me to evaluate someone for a teaching job where the company is providing all the materials, has instructional designers/curriculum building expertly crafted materials to then ask an instructor, who is not expected to create/modify materials, to make their own (as that's not in the job description). 4) How can you compare the teaching delivery of candidates when the materials are different? You are now evaluating the materials produced AND the delivery. This is bad process and does not follow scientific method. You are changing two variables at the same time. Let the candidate teach your materials, then if you want to see if they can develop materials, give them a separate exercise. Don't combine the two.
