      Candidature

J'ai postulé via un recruteur. Le processus a pris 3 jours. J'ai passé un entretien chez Pacejet (Columbus, OH) en août 2021

      Entretien

Only participated in one interview after working with a very helpful independent recruiter who seems to have a long relationship with the company. Was a little off-put when the recruiter began by making a disclaimer about some bad reviews when I mentioned it, but seemed sincere and never encountered any other evidence to the contrary. Spent some time talking about the company and product. Then, a short "technical" portion where I was shown some pieces of their codebase and asked to explain "what it was doing" and "if there was anything wrong with it". This was a bit confusing as they also explained that they tend to appreciate self-documenting code, but I was asked "not to worry about" their class names. The code itself was simple enough, if a bit unclear of intention and sub-optimal in some ways. The interviewers definitely weren't trying to trip you up, just gauging familiarity. I stumbled a bit due to the aforementioned instructions/comments and code quality, but eventually seemed to arrive at the expected conclusions and tried to explain the subjective context in which I might write similar logic, myself. Following this, I was allowed to question the hiring manager a bit, which I tried to take advantage of. They were very open with information and extremely friendly/easy to talk to. I didn't realize it until after the interview, but they barely asked any more questions about me or my experience from a technical or professional perspective. Most of the conversation just revolved around Pacejet/parent company and its history. Maybe I should have taken note of this in the moment and inferred that they already weren't interested in continuing with me, but nonetheless, I was a bit surprised to hear a few days later that this was the case, and mostly that they cited, in a slightly condescending manner, that I was technically "lighter" than they expected. They could be right. I just don't think they got enough information out of me to make that kind of judgement themselves.
