      Entretien

I was interviewed for a mortgage assistant position in the spring of 2016. The interview was pretty standard. We talked about my experience and she -the owner - talked about the position and what the job duties were, what the day-to-day was like, etc. After getting more into the company expectations it became clear that she expected more than a 40 hour work week and that she judged workers mostly on how above & beyond they went. That made me feel like coming in 40 hours a week would and doing a great job would not be good enough. The office itself was really cramped and one of the loan officers was shoved against a wall in the room where people enter with another one in a tiny office only feet away. There were literally tall stacks of paper EVERYWHERE - on every surface in every room. Seeing this, I had to ask if their files were digital and she said yes but she wanted all the paper files as back-up. Well, gee, you might want to work on getting some kind of filing system set-up. Anyway, CLEARLY the office was far too small for multiple people. She also said these things: 1. She likes to listen to people's phone conversations at work so she can she shout out something at you across the office in case you give wrong information. (Gee, that's not obnoxious at all). 2. The office air conditioning shuts off around 5 or 6 and the office can get really hot after that (that's her hint about the late nights she expects). 3. There "might" be a year-end bonus. (Yeah, can really count on that!) The over-riding thing though was that she kept dropping hints about the low pay. She seemed repeatedly concerned with making sure my expectations were set low for the pay. She finally came out and asked me what I expected. Normally I am never the one to throw the first number out but I wanted to make it clear that she could not expect long hours and under-cut me on pay. So I said it had to be in the ballpark of $40k but I "had some flexibility." I said this for 2 reasons. One, because I could tell going over 40 hours a week would probably be a frequent thing and two, she mentioned early on how well her company was doing - business was great. So I was comfortable saying $40k even though I knew it was probably at the top of her range, or even over. She did not like that number. Honestly, I did not like her that much. Tip: When you tell a prospective employee your business is booming don't act like you're surprised when an employee expects you to pay the industry standard. I left knowing I would not get the job. Didn't mind one bit. Not working for a cheap boss who expects a slave.
