      Entretien

Initial call with the recruiter after the resume drop, to walk through a bit of the role, expectations, and your skill sets. The recruiter was excellent in terms of setting up expectations and coaching you for success in the subsequent interviews. Top notch, I have not seen anything like this before in an interview loop. Take advantage of their knowledge and ask many questions if you have any. What followed were a set of technical interviews to flush out skillset. This included the standard things you might expect in a data interview, SQL, modeling, engineering, communication, etc… The recruiter sets you up for success in terms of what to expect. Final round was with the lead data executive, which is a 'psychological test' and many questions about your working style. This was described to me as a means of developing a ‘growth-plan’ if I were to join Masterclass. This is overall to see if you are a cultural fit for the organization. Overall, I found the individuals who work at Masterclass to be extremely collegial, friendly and intelligent. The interview process was really straightforward. The biggest criticism I have and what others should be forewarned before interviewing here is that the lead data executive places a very heavy emphasis on cultural fit, to the point where it is seemingly cultish. It was clearly not a good fit for me, but I was very surprised in their extremely self-inflated views. It’s rather ironic, as while they tout constant feedback in their culture, humility wasn’t one of the traits they espouse. This was markedly different from the IC's I interviewed with. As part of interview process, they ask you to submit references, and repeatedly was asked 'how would your current manager think of X, Y, Z.' This is also mentioned in another response on Glassdoor, look for it. While references are a standard part of the interview process, I saw this as an extremely aggressive means of assessing you as a candidate. It also sets up a potential working relationship in bad footing. Overall, it seems as if the team that works at Masterclass would have been pretty awesome/fun to work with, and they are solving some interesting challenges. They are scaling rapidly, and have a new round of funding for their next phase of growth in the business. While it would have been fun to work here, the lead data executive is extremely polarizing, and not for everybody. The fact that they have 14-15 positions since late winter and not been able to fill them up speaks to they are looking for a very ‘specific-fit.’ If that’s a good thing or a bad thing is up to you to decide. Compensation for the role is also not too strong, especially considering what they are looking for - it is very easy to find a data role that pays 20-30% more, without having the feeling that you are being psychoanalyzed through out the process for all your insecurities.
