Their in-house recruiter contacted me via LinkedIn. My first call was with the recruiter to go over high-level details of what the position entailed. I was scheduled for an initial video interview with the department manager. It was a typical 45-minute interview containing questions related to the roles/responsibilities of the ASE, then a substantial section devoted to technical scenario questions.
The next day, I received an email from the recruiter with very detailed (3-4 substantial paragraphs) feedback on the manager's observations. The manager decided that I was not qualified enough for the position, but said I was qualified for a lower position in a different department (managed services).
I'm trying to get out of the managed services/support role and get into design & implementation, so I turned down the offer to continue to interview for the managed services engineer role. In the past, I've experienced (both first-hand and heard from colleagues) companies will hire you for a lower role (i.e. lower pay), then pigeonhole you into that role or advancement track, often taking advantage of skills that are needed for the original, higher position while providing absolutely no guidance or support in how to ultimately transition into the position you wanted in the first place.
It's a job seeker's market right now, so I'm not going to allow myself to be pigeonholed yet again in my career. There are plenty of other interested organizations with whom I can grow my career the way I want to grow my career.
