      Entretien

Applied on their website. Got a call from corporate recruiter literally four months later. Had a bit of e-mail back and forth with him, and he set up a group phone interview for me with three Chief/Principal/Senior level engineers. I had some experience with HSMs, micro-controllers, and FPGAs, but on a very rudimentary basis only as I am more of an application and database developer. Indeed the position I applied for was JAVA SOFTWARE Architect, and the job description was what you would expect. Despite that, they prodded me for a while on my knowledge of FPGAs, HSMs, and microcontrollers for some strange reason. Didn't make me uncomfortable- I spoke to the degree to which I know about these things, and was honest about my limited experience with that. Then they asked me a mix of high level technical questions (how would you document this, what sort of problems do you normally find with that, what type of work do you do now), and leadership-related questions. They were all pretty easy and I thought I answered them all really well. A few days later, heard back from recruiter saying I was lacking experience in "a specific area" that they are looking for. Not really sure what that meant since the only areas I didn't have adequate experience with were the hardware-related topics, which there was no mention of in the job description. It was almost as if I was interviewing for an entirely different job than what was described in the descrption. At the end of the day, however, I would call this a positive experience. A little odd. But the corporate recruiter was VERY responsive, provided feedback (although not as detailed as I'd hoped) when I asked for it, and gave me a very direct "NO" when he knew they would not be moving forward with me. I appreciate that because many recruiters will just leave you hanging for days or weeks on end or even indefinitely. Also, the three interviews that I did the phone call with seemed like intelligent, knowledgeable, and personable folks. It is unfortunate I wasn't the right fit, but for you other job seekers out there, for what it's worth this team sounded like a decent group to land in. One thing... I applied for the position in "San Diego, CA", and I assumed the job would be at their big corporate office in North County and would be a 10 minute commute for me. But during the phone interview they told me the position would be down in Point Loma (over an hour away in traffic), with no working from home ever allowed. Bummer.
