I emailed the CEO asking for an interview - he forwarded me to one of the hiring managers. The first step was a phone interview. The calendar invite had a video link so I assumed I'd be going onto the video. 6 minutes into the interview time, he emails me telling me to call - I apologize for being late, but hope that this didn't go against my interview. I *think* this went well and he said I would be able to talk to a product designer next week and he would follow up. He never followed up, even when I emailed 5 days later to ask about my status, then the next day I got a automated rejection email. I emailed back saying that I would've appreciated an explanation if there was a misunderstanding on the phone rather than getting an automated email. He replied telling me that they had already been deep in the interview process of hiring someone else so there was no use for me.

Question 1
Describe your design process if you were assigned to design a feature
Phone screen with hiring manager, then a take-home design challenge. 8 hour design challenge (pretty ridiculous considering I'm employed full time) with a very open ended prompt that honestly reflects pretty poorly on the design culture or ethos of the team. Promised a response within 2-3 days, received a rejection a week and a half later. Nobody even looked at the submission until the day before I got rejected. Went with another company.

I interviewed with Handshake in 2019. The interview process consisted of standard, multi-round design interviews. Generally the people I interviewed with didn't seem like they wanted to be there. I felt like they wasted my time and were unprofessional throughout the interview process - they also refused to give me feedback when the generic rejection message was sent. Ultimately, I ended up accepting another offer.
My only advice is to steer clear, and read the other reviews of how interviews go at Handshake.

I was contacted by email and we scheduled an interview. The interviewer was quite rude, she skipped the introduction part and jumped right into demonstrating she had not read my application, then rudely closed the call a minute later.
