Initial application was with CV and cover letter. I think there was then a stage of online tests, followed by an online video interview. Completed that and then just heard nothing for months. Emailed the company to ask for an update, and they responded weeks later saying the position had been closed. Would have been nice for them to let me know! If I hadn't emailed no doubt I would have just been left endlessly waiting mid-application.
