The recruiter reached out, and we had a productive conversation about the role and the team. I learned that the team had previously passed on several strong candidates who lacked specific skill sets they deemed essential. I was encouraged to clearly demonstrate how my experience aligned with those expectations.
The first interview was with a Director who had been with the company for many years and had recently transitioned from an individual contributor to a leadership position. While the questions were relatively basic, they provided meaningful insight into the team's maturity and the organization's overall structure.
It became clear that the role was an aggregation of responsibilities currently distributed across multiple teams—essentially forming a "Frankenstein" position. The scope was extensive, with expectations that spanned multiple domains, yet without the authority to drive change or establish policy. One particular question about handling customer data was framed as having no wrong answer, but it was evident there was only one acceptable response. This gave the impression that the interview was as much about gauging compliance and manageability as it was about assessing technical competence.
Ultimately, I concluded that I was significantly overqualified for the position. Several aspects of the role appeared more appropriate for a mid-level engineer rather than someone at my level. In hindsight, I was grateful they chose not to move forward—it was a decision that turned out to be a blessing.
