      Entretien

I went through 2 interviews, the first one was with Mr. Jamal, who is a co-founder and CEO. The second one was with Mr. Naeem, who is the other co-founder. Both interviews were general and lasted around 30 minutes each. It was just general questions about my previous work experience and basic behavioural questions. They both seemed to like me, and were talking about how they could see me as a VP of Machine Learning in 6 months if I worked hard initially and proved myself. I was super excited. After the second interview, which was with Mr.Naeem , I got an email the next day saying that they would like me to complete a "mini project" to "see if we can work together longer term". After this, I was left hanging for a few days. I emailed asking when I can expect to be given the details of the project, and I was told I would get it during the coming weekend. It didn't happen. I had to keep chasing Mr.Naeem to get the mini-project. Finally, after over 10 days since my interview with Mr.Naeem , I got the mini-project. It seemed simple, just build a static website with a few simple pages. I was sent a word doc with explicit requirements, and a link to a video where Mr.Naeem explained the task. A simple front-end task. I was told by Asad on the phone that the task is simple, and they just want a quick and dirty solution to see if I can work quickly. All fine by me so far. I was shown what the website should look like, but wasn't given any sort of starter code, so I spent around 5-6 hours to get the website ready using front end technologies. I send this finished code within 24 hours of receiving the task, Mr.Naeem specifically thanked me for getting it done so quick . Unfortunately, now Mr.Naeem wanted me to also deploy this code on the their cloud platform, new work that wasn't included in the original instructions for this mini-project. Nonetheless, I did it anyway. Then Mr.Naeem asked me to add extra functionality to the website, and have it working on the cloud. At this point, I felt a bit cheated as he kept adding new work for me to do, and kept ignoring my attempt to discuss the salary range for this job, if I was hired. When I explicitly gave him a range that I had in mind, and asked for his thoughts, he completely dodged it and gave me a really suspicious answer. Instead of addressing the numbers, he just said that they will give me “a very attractive compensation package as we do with all our team mates here”. I finally pointed out that this was too much work for me to do for free, as part of the hiring process. I asked to at-least DISCUSS compensation for this mini-project, and to talk about a salary range that they had in mind, if I was hired. A couple of days later, I was sent a rejection email saying that the competition for this role was tough and they won’t be moving forward with my candidacy. What they actually meant, from my understanding, was probably along the lines of, “we don’t want to address anything you said, and we don’t want to pay you for your work since we have more people in the pipeline to exploit and use for free labour. We didn’t intend to hire you anyway.” After having spent well over 10 hours to do the work for this company, actual REAL work that they planned to deploy, I was left with nothing. No compensation for my work. No offer. Stay away from this company, they are just exploiting people for free labour. Also, if they treat job candidates like this, I wouldn’t be too optimistic about how they treat actual customers.
