      Entretien

My interview had to be rescheduled because on the day that I showed up both my interviewers were ill and they had not been able to contact me to cancel. I met a gentleman from HR who was very apologetic and polite and stressed they would reimburse for my travel expenses that day. He mentioned there was vast opportunity for movement within the company which left me with a very positive image as I was trying to career change. When I was invited for interview I was told I would have a short HR interview and then be interviewed by 2 other people whose designations were not mentioned. I sent an email asking for a bit of information on the background of these two interviewers so that I could prepare accordingly. This was not responded to. I repeated this request on the day of my abortive interview and was told that one was a business analyst and the other a software developer. In fact as I found at the actual interview both my interviewers were software testers. I don't think my HR interview went well, I have been a contractor for most of my career and have never had an HR interview so really I had no idea what to expect. I was informed that they use an external company for background checks so I disclosed that there some jobs that I had omitted from my CV. I gave some background to the circumstances and to their credit, I was assured it was not relevant to my ability to do the job. I was told I would receive a personal phone call giving me interview feedback as it was their policy to do that instead of writing letters. I was told they were experiencing 30% year on year growth and there were several vacancies that needed to be filled, earlier they had mentioned that a possible outcome of the interview process may be that I could be recommended for a different vacancy. Below are my observations on the process overall. I felt I was being interviewed for a contractor job. There was a complete lack of interest in my qualifications or anything else I had done beyond the job specific experience. Whilst I was answering a question from one interviewer, I noticed the other one playing with her IPhone. I asked both my interviewers why they were still with the company, one said he didn't like moving jobs the other said it was convenient for her kids, I was not impressed by either answer especially the last one. They admitted that to a large extent their job involved alot of firefighting and mostly manual testing and they rarely were afforded the time to consider better ways of doing their job. All in all the interview was unstructured to the point where I would say it lacked focus. A week after the interview I had not heard anything from Fidessa so I called. I was told they would get back to me with feedback from the team. About half an hour later I was told that they felt I came across well in my interview but they would not be taking my application further because they had seen candidates who they felt were stronger technically. That was the sum total of my feedback. I should add that I was not asked a single technical question at my interview. Alot of things that I was told in the run up to my interview turned out not to be really true, or should I say they were not fulfilled. Already mentioned the inaccurate information about the interviewers backgrounds. Why make a big fuss about giving people personal feedback via a phone call if all you are going to do is give the same anodyne excuses that employers put in their rejection letter. If I came across well (as I was told) why not refer me another vacancy, since good candidates are (as they say) difficult to come by? So I have to say I am inclined not to believe the feedback I was given. For a company that says they like to recruit good graduates there was a complete disinterest in what I had done in my degree (masters computer science), which I completed the year before. Although the HR guy told me they were improving in the way they handle people, I would say they still have a way to go. It seems that once they had decided they were not going to proceed with me, they couldn't be bothered to give me any (much less timely) feedback. It took a month to get reimbursed for my abortive journey and that was only after I sent an email to chase. They don't pay interview expenses, which considering they boast 30% year on year growth seems short sighted and mean. During my HR interview, I was told that the company used to lowball staff in salary negotiations but that was changing. I have to say that I was left with the impression of a company that hasn't yet shed it's culture of taking advantage of people.
