      Candidature

J'ai postulé en ligne. Le processus a pris 7 semaines. J'ai passé un entretien chez Evernote en oct. 2013

      Entretien

Originally I applied for this position by participating in one of the online challenges organized by Evernote. A few days after completing the challenge, an HR person reached out to me first by e-mail later on by Skype. Basically this call was the screening part of the interview where she introduced both the company and the position; asked general questions about my professional background, whether I am willing to relocate, what are my needs, etc. This was followed by two more technical interviews and I had to fulfill and additional programming assignment. The first interview was more theoretical in the sense I got a question then I had to propose a solution without actually coding it. I was asked to discuss different properties of the proposed solution as well like time and space complexity. This can be thought of as a professional discussion about algorithmic and ML-related - involving some probability theory as well - problems between two experts. The second technical interview was the real coding interview. Here I had to solve some programming tasks which focused on mostly the coding skills. I had to type the code into a shared Google Document in this way the interviewer was able to see how I work on the problem in real time. Sometimes he asked modifications as well, like "could you please provide a recursive solution of that part instead". The third task was a bit surprising for me first. Here I was asked to solve a machine learning task that used the Evernote API as well. The task description gave me the freedom to use external open source tools which was fine. First it seemed me a bit unusual, however now I find it extremely useful, since it gives more insight into the professional background of the candidate and how he gets the things done. I could summarize my overall experience as follows: - both the HR and technical people were really nice, - they did a very good job, they were precise, reliable and responsive. BTW these properties remained after the hiring process. They helped me a lot to obtain my visa, etc.
