J'ai postulé en ligne. J'ai passé un entretien chez Etsy (New York, NY) en sept. 2020

      Entretien

I applied online and was contacted by a recruiter. I had a 30 minute phone screening, and the recruiter was very eager to pass me to the hiring manager. The hiring manager told the recruiter that the next step of the interview is to have a conversational interview via video chat, which I was scheduled for. Upon arriving at the video interview, and after introductions, I was then asked to present my CASE STUDY. Which I obviously hadn't prepared. I told the interviewer that I had not been asked to prepare a case study, and could she please give me a brief explanation of what they are looking for so that I can choose a project in my portfolio to go over. I spent a week preparing for a conversational interview, and to be told to present a case study is unfair to candidates. After speaking again with the recruiter, it does not sound like this was a misunderstanding between them. It is up to the senior product designer on the team how they want to conduct their interviews, and this particular senior designer decided to surprise candidates with a case study request. I'm all for being prepared for anything, but case studies and Q&A are two different stages of the interview process and case studies not be sprung on candidates. All the candidates that were interviewed during this round were denied a second chance to present a case study, and instead they made a hiring decision based on the surprise case study. Overall, I love the company and what it stands for, and my experience with the recruiter was very positive. But my second stage of the interview was so unexpected and unfair, that I will not apply for any positions within this company again.

      Question 1

Please present your case study. What is the make up of the team you currently work with? What design artefacts have you created for the engineers? How do you make decisions about what should be included in your designs?

The process felt very templated. No feedback throughout. Just a series of questions they can choose from. I wouldn't say it was my favorite but I see why it's valuable to judge everyone equally.

Had a manager ask me basic questions about design process and I provided accurate and substantial answers. I even followed up with, "have I answered your question?" They seemed unhappy with my responses and couldn't find another way to ask for whatever they were looking for.

We appreciate you sharing your experience with us though we’re sorry to hear your interview process wasn’t what you hoped it would be. Our teams use a skills-based hiring rubric with a consistent order of interview questions, allowing each candidate equal opportunity to relay capabilities. We understand this can be interpreted as inflexible, but hope this explanation helps you to feel more at ease with your interview experience.
