To preface this, I was already employed when I had this phone interview, was just exploring other options. The HR rep conducting the interview seemed extremely annoyed right from the start. Completely threw me off. There was no attempt to ask engaging questions, and quite frankly seemed like it was a chore. My time is just as valuable, hence why I am a "Senior Leader", applying for a "Senior Leadership" role. I am a firm believer that anyone working in HR should make an attempt to build rapport with a potential applicant and ask creative, open ended questions to gauge an applicant's depth of knowledge, personality traits, and leadership capabilities. Besides being rushed, the interview questions were generic, like they were reading right from the computer screen and were not challenging. My hunch is the person has been doing the job for way too long. It's certainly a shame because it set a bad tone for the company and discouraged me from wanting to go any further in the process regardless of the outcome. I would definitely suggest this company reviews their phone interviewing guidelines, and if phone screening is inevitable during the process, find a more efficient way to conduct these interviews. I believe phone interviews are extremely antiquated in today's day and age, and should be replaced by video calls or strictly face to face. You cannot gauge the right fit for a role on the phone for a position that is highly non-remote and customer facing. At the very least, find people to interview for your company that at least pretend to enjoy talking to people. Moral of the story: complete waste of 30 minutes of my day, and I landed a better job a month later.
