I didn't follow the typical interview process because I was the second employee, however, I saw that the same thing tended to be important from when I joined through to the company's growth into a more established company -- if you can prove your value upfront (in a concrete way, with a powerpoint or another prepared format) that goes a very long way. Passion is also extremely important, and knowledge/appreciation of the evolving financial services industry is a plus.
