I applied to job opening on the Developers APIs team in Seattle on LinkedIn Jobs. Recruiter reached out a day or two afterwards and scheduled me for a phone screening — on coderpad.io — that went fairly smoothly. However, it seemed I didn't leave a strong impression on the interviewer so I was scheduled for a second phone screening that went really well. I was then promptly invited for a full day of on-site interviews at Square's HQ in San Francisco. The on-site interviews were very well organized; an interview coordinator was in my reception, showed me around, made sure my interviewers showed up on time and stayed on schedule. Interviewers were very friendly and helpful. The interviews comprised 3 peer programming sessions, 1 design/architecture session and 1 in-depth walkthrough of previous project work on my resume. During the coding sessions, I worked with my interviewers on computers equipped with a pair of keyboards and mice to solve questions that were broken down into multiple parts with an increasing level of difficulty. The computers were equipped with dev tools for a wide variety of programming languages but we used coderpad.io because the language I chose to use didn't have an installed toolset. The interviews were truly collaborative — interviewers actually helped me write logging code, corrected minor mistakes, and made suggestions to make things easier. The coding questions were not algorithmic in nature and I was not asked about time or space complexities of my solutions. My interviewers seemed to be most interested in code cleanliness, API simplicity, good organization, and sound functionality. I loved how well organized and well thought out the questions were, but was a little concerned they seemed solely focused on modeling data, e.g. representing entities or rules of a simple game, and did not assess CS fundamentals as much. The recruiter — who was very prompt and punctual throughout the process — reached out immediately on the following day and an offer was made very promptly. I tried negotiating but got a nay. Offered compensation was a little less than what I'd hoped in terms of Base Pay and Sign-on but RSUs were OK. I wasn't sure I liked the work the team I applied for was doing and had another slightly better offer with more interesting work elsewhere. I liked most of the people I met at Square and I think it is definitely a unique place.

I had a call with their recruiter first, talked about my past experience and what I'm look in for in my next role. Then had a technical front-end screening with two engineers where I needed to build an application. I thought I did well, I was able to implement a working app, but I did not pass. Not further feedback was given.

      Questions d'entretien [1]

      Question 1

Implement a memory game in any JS framework or vanilla JS. You need to implement this game based on some demo app that you can play around with before hand. You need to implement the HTML/CSS and JS all from scratch. The game has the following behavior: you need to display N x N cards in a grid lay out. The number of N should be configurable by the user through a slider. When the user clicks a "start" button, N cards a highlighted for 2-3 seconds. Then the user needs to click on the cards that were highlighted. If the user clicks on the correct card, it changes the color to green, otherwise it changes to red. If all the initially highlighted cards are clicked the game is over. What to watch out for: you need to track the cards that were clicked in the grid, you need pick N random cards to be highlighted for each round of the game. You need to make sure the gird of N cards can be increased and reduced. It's not enough that the app works, you also need to write clean/readable code. You have about 40 minutes to implement this, and you need to talk through your work.
