Everything started out real nice and smooth in the beginning but things got real muddy towards the end. They flew me into the office and did a half day interview on a Friday. I met a total of 5 people during the process. The interview has a good mix of remote video chat, and in person interview in a conference room. During the interview, everyone seemed really excited about their upcoming work retreat. I was expecting to hear updates/results no later then Wednesday the week after. For any future candidates, BetterUp's "work retreat" means the office will be completely closed. That was never communicated with me in my entire process of the interview. I finally heard back from them Friday the week after and notified me a new timeline. At that point, I realized the interviewing team had not discussed or made a decision about my interview for more then a week.

      Question 1

Q: How does BetterUp connect with you on a personal level/goal? He gave me an example of how he's really into wellness and BetterUp offers yoga/fitness program in office....

Thank you for this feedback as we are constantly working on improving our candidate experience at BetterUp. It is great to hear your positive experiences with our interview however the lack of communication towards the end of the process is concerning. We’ll leverage this feedback to further strengthen our communication processes to ensure that candidates are aware of timelines especially when we expect to be slow to respond due to our office being closed for a company retreat. Thanks again for taking the time to write up a review as this only makes us a better company.

The interview process at BetterUp focusses heavily on behavioral questions to better understand a candidate's mentality. There were several rounds of interviews: a recruiter call, a hiring manager interview, a portfolio review, four hour onsite interview, executive interview, and finally a founders interview. Other than the portfolio review, all other interviews focussed on behavioral questions rather than test exercises or skill assessments. Usually lengthy interview processes can feel draining, however, after each interview with BetterUp I found that I walked away feeling energized and excited for the next conversation as interviewers were highly engaged and asked great questions that lead to interesting conversations.

The process was fast and quick, which I appreciate from the rest of the companies. Step 1: Call with HR partner (30mins) Step 2: Call with Hiring Manager (30 mins) Step 3: Take home design assignment (based on your portfolio) The interview process was fast and moved quickly. The call with the hiring manager was more informative. I learned about the company, role, team, and immediate product goals and shared your experience, projects, how you collaborate, and project highlights—very organic conversation. After getting through the HM call, you are given a take-home assignment based on your past work experience. Along with the prompt, they give you a few things you need to highlight in your portfolio take-home. Not sure internally what's the assessment process, safe to assume it's a biased one. I didn't get selected after this round. There isn't even a conversation to talk about your work. It's like somebody woke up, decided they didn't like the project and just reject. Such a horrible assessment system. They also don't compensate for the work you've done. The least, the team could have given constructive feedback. I don't feel bad about for not progressing through this interview process. Because it gave me an idea of how they might treat their employees and a glimpse into their "Design culture" No feedback, no insight, nada. Don't expect too much from this interview process.
