      Entretien pour Software Engineer

      26 mars 2018
      Candidat à l'entretien anonyme
      Burnaby, BC
      Aucune offre
      Expérience négative
      Entretien facile

      Candidature

J'ai postulé via un établissement d'enseignement supérieur ou universitaire. Le processus a pris 5 semaines. J'ai passé un entretien chez Arista Networks (Burnaby, BC) en mars 2018

      Entretien

I applied at a career fair on campus at end of January. I was contacted a few weeks later to schedule an onsite interview to take place at the beginning of March. By far the worst interview experience I've ever had. The interviewer was clearly unprepared and had no questions to ask initially even though this interview had been scheduled a month in advance. The interviewer was his phone occasionally while I was completing the coding questions and thinking my solution out loud. I had also noticed his unfortunate habit of periodically putting his fingers to his lips and teeth before touching the keyboard of the laptop I was given to use. Eventually, I was asked questions regarding C/C++, the memory layout of a program (stack, heap, etc), what is a mutex, what is and how to prevent deadlock from happening, etc. I was given 2 coding questions that had to be completed in C. The over-the-shoulder nature of the interview was extremely off-putting and I would be stopped every time I made a typo or a small bug. My advice to Arista would be to allow the candidate to code and test the solution ourselves. We're here to show you that we can solve the problem and catch the errors ourselves through testing. No one writes perfect code on the first try. 1. Determine if a string is a palindrome. Ignore case. Extremely easy. Must know C specific string library function tolower. 2. Merge 2 sorted linked lists. Was not able to finish due to the interviewer catching me mis-assigning a reference and proceeding to stand up and explain to me what a shallow vs deep copy is. At this point, I was unimpressed and unmotivated to explain that it was a typo and to let me finish.

J'ai postulé via un recruteur. J'ai passé un entretien chez Arista Networks en juin 2026

      Entretien

Pros: Great initial approach – the recruiter thoroughly checked my GitHub profile and projects before the interview, which is very uncommon and shows they do their homework. Cons: A major mismatch between the job description ("Software Engineer C++") and the actual interview reality. The technical stage on CoderPad strictly tests bare-metal C98 skills: raw pointers, manual bitwise operations, and packing bytes into 64-bit integers. If you are accustomed to modern C++ (RAII, templates, safe memory management), this will feel like a massive step backward. Additionally, the time expectations for live low-level bit-shifting were unrealistic, to the point where the interviewer started solving the task themselves. Interview was kind and not stressful, just minor mismatch of naming

Pretty good, not too complicated, was comfortable. Mostly LC questions, and was easy enough that you should be able to do it after doing NC150. good luck for the interview!

Starts with online test, then three rounds of technical interviews follow. Not a lot of discussion, just go straight to the technical challenges which have to be solved in time
