      Entretien

Approached by recruiter, and scheduled an initial screening. I was told the interview wont be ML/AI related and will be around AWS and cloud value proposition. She provided me some sample questions that I should work on. Surprise! the screening was entirely ML and AI theory questions, so please do not listen to Amazon recruiters. Always be ready for anything and everything. Regardless, I aced the technical screening, the interviewer explicitly told me that he is not supposed to give me feedback but he will in this case, because I answered all AI/ML questions perfectly. Following screening, five 1-hr interviews were scheduled. They took forever to schedule them. Basically my screening was in early July and my on-sites were scheduled for early August. I had to postpone a planned summer holiday because of the interviews (my biggest mistake). I was told by the recruiter that the on-sites will be scenario-based STAR interviews and no coding or Algos. Well, there was coding so again ignore the direction given by the recruiter. The interviews were a combination of ML/AI knowledge, fairly basic not in depth at all and then super heavy on the STAR scenarios: Tell me a time you tripped over and fell on a client and how did you turn that opportunity into revenue generation (I joke but you get the idea). The interviewers act very robotic and staged during the STAR section: They're typing and taking notes, constantly interrupting you under time pressure, asking the exact same questions over and over in every single interview, sometimes I noticed they weren't even listening and asked me to repeat what I said so they can catch up and type it. I found it really staged, superficial and robotic. It was my least favorite part of the whole interview process. By the 5th interview, I had a headache from repeating answers to the exact same questions over and over again in every interview. Anyway, I managed to survive the tedious STAR interviews. They told me I will hear back within 5 days. Well, I did not hear back for another 10 days. Then, I received this predictably robotic email (like everything else), "we have been enjoying getting to know you, thank you for taking the time to complete the interviews ...", do you have time to go over your feedback together? At that point, I knew this is a rejection because they're just so predictable in their communications you can just know what is going on. On the call, the recruiter said that I aced the technical and functional aspect, the breadth and depth of my technical and functional knowledge was great, I even did well on a lot of the leadership principles but they still decided to go with someone else. Her stated reason was that I did not provide sufficient "data" in my scenarios which is totally inaccurate. I provided data points wherever applicable: e.g., clearly stated that my work doubled sales of X product, reduced operational time by 50%, saved a venture worth 10 million dollar from failing, etc.. I provided facts and numbers where applicable. It honestly sounded like an excuse just to reject you and not something based on solid evidence. They basically wasted my time. I had interviewed with amazon for applied science roles before and had actually received an exception offer just a few years back. So to say I didn't meet the LP aspect is just meaningless as I am the same person who received an exception offer going through the exact same interviews and leadership principles only 2 years ago. This just shows how hand-wavy and subjective the whole interview process is: you repeat the same thing twice and receive to polar opposite outcomes, an exception offer and a hand-wavy rejection. Anyway, all in all, I would never apply for Amazon again. I believe there are far better options out there for solid AI talent and there are far better methods of evaluating AI talent than staged robotic STAR interrogations. I definitely suggest to stay away if you value your time and want to avoid frustrations.
