      Entretien pour Software Engineer

      Candidature

J'ai postulé via un recruteur. J'ai passé un entretien chez Aha! (Salt Lake City, UT) en juil. 2020

      Entretien

I first met with their recruiter, who just got to know me a little (he reached out to me first). He set me up with a tech lead who asked me questions about how I would design Spotify's software (straightforward domain design questions). I was then interviewed by a director who asked me more design questions and what my career aspirations were. Then I interviewed with the CTO who asked me relatively detailed computer science questions. At no point did I write any code. Finally I chatted with the CEO, and then one more follow-up with the CTO. Then I got an email saying they decided to pass on me. When I asked why they'd take me through this whole long process, give me all positive feedback, and then decided not to hire me, they totally ghosted me, leaving me largely in the dark about "what's wrong with me".

      Questions d'entretien [1]

      Question 1

How would you design Spotify? How do playlists, artists, albums, songs, etc. all relate to each other (has many, belongs to, etc).

I am sorry to read that you feel you were left in the dark. We work hard to provide as much information as we are able to at the end of the process. I know we spoke live. In general, when someone spends more than two hours with us, we always have a live follow-up conversation to explain our thoughts if we are not proceeding. And we understand that our explanation is sometimes disappointing and unfortunately not always satisfying. I appreciate your candid feedback because we can always improve. We wish you the best and hope that you did or will find a great opportunity.

The recruiter asks you generic questions. Look up the company on Reddit about how their job ads run 24/7. They seem to be banking interviews for some reason. Feels very phishy.

Yes. It is true. Our jobs have been consistently running for 12 years. That is because we are consistently hiring for a number of positions and have been from the beginning. This is true in engineering and in customer success. There is no additional reason they are posted – aside from the fact that we are trying to hire people. We do not spend time meeting with people who we do not think could be well aligned with the role and company. We do not have time for that. Now, the company was fully bootstrapped and we focus on organic and profitable growth. We are a $100M company but the team is relatively small. This means that we are not the right place for everyone but I know that we do everything we can to treat every candidate with respect. We hope that you find the ideal role that you are looking for.

While it is nice that they don't require live coding, you might find it challenging to talk through unfamiliar code on the screen. It's not a helpful measuring step, so your mileage may vary.

The first interview was with a recruiter, the second interview was with the managers, and the third was with the senior developers of the team. The first two were conversational and the last was a technical interview that consisted of answering questions about the programming language.
