13/20 employees were suddenly laid off with no eye contact or genuine sympathy from the CEO, Dan Johnston.

I’m deeply sorry that you felt there was a lack of sympathy during this layoff. As if losing your job wasn’t hard enough, to have it happen without feeling that connection with leadership must have made it even worse. Executing the reduction in headcount in 2019 was undoubtedly the most difficult thing I have had to do in my career. At the time, we grew our team too fast, and needed to change course to operate the business more efficiently to continue to achieve our mission. All of that was my fault. Navigating these conversations was a first for me, and doing it over Zoom with a distributed team made it even harder. On the other side, our team has worked incredibly hard to ensure that the equity and effort of all WorkStep employees (past and present) will yield outsized value. Now that we’re fortunate to be in a place where we’re profitable and again growing the team quickly, if there is interest on your end, I would be more than happy to see if there is an opportunity for you at WorkStep. We still have a close-knit team with incredible work ethic. Wishing you all the best in whatever came next for you after your time at WorkStep. Thank you for your contributions. -Dan

The benefits and the culture were really nice.

Inconvénients

This is a dying startup with the most basic software imaginable, it’s literally running on a potato and everyone is pretending it’s the latest and greatest. The leadership could never take this company to the next level because none of them have been at the next level, they’ve never worked for any large companies so what makes you think they could run one? Most people have director titles and there is only one person in that department so do what you will with that information. I understand startup culture and it’s hard work but at least theres a dream or some belief that the product you’re working on is amazing and life changing. This is the least innovative backwards horse drawn carriage product in a world of electric cars. All the leadership are just small fish, yet somehow want to puff up their chest and think they have the slightest idea on what they’re doing. Here at this company you’ll just be twiddling your thumbs waiting for the chopping block. One of the most regrettable times in my career.
