Avantages
The work was straightforward and easy for more, even when dealing with complicated issues or patron concerns. The pay was okay at just under ten an hour. Being part time I wasn't expecting any benefits but I did receive a decent enough number of sick and vacation days.
Inconvénients
The leadership are poor in their management and are unable or unwilling to fire employees, whether they are accused with evidence of sexual harrassment or shown to be very disruptive to the workplace, or simply ineffective in their job in a way which hinders the rest of the staff. The full time staff treat the part time staff like a lesser class of human beings, even though they work the earlier shifts when very few people if any come in to the library and therefore do minimal work, while the part time staff tend to work evenings and weekends, when we are packed with people. In terms of promotions, almost everything is interviewed for and if someone has a personal grudge of any kind against you or the desk you work at they'll avoid hiring you for anything, even if you have years of experience and the person who they do end up hiring has no work ethic and is hated by every other staff member for it. It can also be difficult to take any time off or appropriately schedule around any conflicts you may have, and rather than just move what shifts you work they'll just cut your hours. Plus, there's a lawsuit against the library and several others so who knows how that'll go down.
