Compensation at the company leaves much to be desired, especially considering the industry standards and the company's purported mission.
While individual departments demonstrate competence in their respective fields, the overall organizational leadership has shown a concerning lack of maturity. The management style often resembles that of a high school social hierarchy rather than a professional global health company. This discrepancy between individual talent and organizational culture is both puzzling and disappointing.
It's worth noting that there has been a recent change in management. The observations here are based on experiences under the previous leadership. One can only hope that the new regime brings the much-needed experience and maturity that was conspicuously absent before.
Specific issues I experience or observed include:
- Promotions based on personal relationships rather than objective performance metrics
- Inconsistent handling of promotions, including offers being rescinded without adequate explanation
- Lack of transparency regarding salaries and bonuses
- Instances of supervisory bullying, for example managers essentially challenging employees to report them.
- Absence of a reliable, objective, and truly anonymous HR reporting mechanism
The lack of trust in HR's ability to conduct impartial investigations and maintain confidentiality is a significant concern that needs urgent attention.
A pervasive culture of groupthink and lack of accountability is evident throughout the organization. External challenges are often met with deflection rather than introspection. Legal sanctions are blamed on the FTC, negative press is dismissed as misinformation, and financial downturns are attributed to the parent company. There's a tendency towards self-righteousness, with the company's mission of "providing mental health to the world" being used to justify questionable decisions.
This lack of self-awareness and reluctance to engage in honest self-reflection is detrimental to the company's growth and credibility.
Implementing a culture of accountability, transparency, and genuine self-assessment would greatly benefit the organization and its stakeholders. It's high time for the company to align its internal practices with its external mission of promoting mental health and well-being.
