Given the individual was a strong performer skill wise, my responses focused on coaching the individual and while I discussed performance management I didn’t terminate them. However, I surmise that because this company has a legacy stack they want to modernize, it looks like what they are looking for someone who will come in and aggressively terminate individuals for their behaviour as opposed to skill gaps. They want the manager to act on their own authority rather than seek input and support from the broader management team. I don’t know how widespread this issue is, but I could easily see this resulting in a culture of fear especially since the VP seemed highly ruthless.
