Avantages

If I didn’t have a good manager this review would have been 1 star. So store-level management can be good, very fair and understanding (depends). You learn a lot about wine, and you get free bottles for wine issues to learn more. The company does encourage a lot of learning this way. As well, sometimes there are incentives for selling depending on your store. It’s also a pretty relaxed environment in the right store.

Inconvénients

My store-level manager is great, however I have worked in other stores and have had experiences with other store-level managers that were awful, as they didn’t treat you with any respect. Middle management and upper management are where the real problems lie though. Stores are extremely micro-managed, so differences in store-to-store experiences and needs are not considered at all. Many staff are underpaid for the level of work they do, employees have been promised or given position, and had those positions revoked for no good reason other than the company saving money. Staff are seen as completely disposable/ replaceable, and labour hours and employee incentives are where they cut when the company needs to save money, despite them spending extreme amounts on middle/upper management salaries, marketing and purchasing new brands and wineries.

Avantages

The free wine is a bonus you'll need it if you work here. Met some nice people. You don't have to think too hard to do this job.

Inconvénients

It is very part- time (10-25 hrs/ week) but management expects you to be available 24/7 and gets upset when you aren't. The pay is terrible and raises are a joke/ non-existent. They staff to the bare minimum which means you are alone for usually at least 5 hours at a time. Schedule you so that you can't take a break (even stretches that are longer than 5 hours). I have gone 6+ hours without being allowed to sit down. You must follow a robotic script that leaves no room for real customer interaction otherwise you don't get 100% on the dreaded mystery shop. Mystery shoppers are generally stupid and make stupid comments that really don't reflect the customer service. The company uses low brow/ humiliating sales tactics like the "grape suit" and sign holding. Very demeaning and cheapens Ontario wine image. The company really doesn't care about it's employees (both hourly and management) they just want to squeeze everything they can out of you for the least amount of money possible so they can post better quarterly reports to their investors.
