Avantages
It's a very well established small business. The owners are involved in the day to day operations and care immensely for their customers. Depending on the department, you can have great relationships with your co-workers and manager. They pay competitively and sales people can make great money if they are motivated to learn on their own. Like with many small businesses, you can have the opportunity to develop skills just outside of your essential duties. At SMP, you'll need to be resilient enough to push past the bad in order to be able to experience the good. They have offerred benefits long before the government made it a requirement.
Inconvénients
There is little to no established training for most positions. The customer service and warehouse positions are the only teams I would say have an actual training plan. Employees are not given feedback in a timely manner unless it's negative feedback. Performance evaluations are incredibly inconsistent if done at all. The management team is lacking the soft skills one would expect to have in their roles. Their hiring criteria is based on intuition, biases, and fear rather than if candidates are truly qualified. Benefits are OK, but in comparison to other retailers (which they consider themselves to be although only about 20% off the staff is in the retail location) you'd have more options elsewhere. In comparison to other corporate benefits package, you'll probably be disappointed.
