Avantages

Benefits are pretty good, compared to many other animal welfare orgs. Pay is decent and has improved a lot in a couple years, although it still isn't enough to rent a one-bedroom apartment in Seattle if you're a single renter. Company offers employees a 401K, which is a plus, and colleagues are generally friendly, collaborative, and open-minded (this is an org that emphasizes DEI at a very granular level, especially in its hiring practices).

Inconvénients

Sick time/PTO are rolled into one, and the accrual rate for hourly staff is pretty terrible. Leadership can be hit or miss. Some of the upper-level managers preach flexibility and inclusivity, but they're also pretty rigid about expectations. People wear a lot of hats here, and it isn't surprising to find your work volume (relative to your job description) has suddenly increased, depending on staffing needs and changing priorities internally. Career laddering is generally poor, and raises just aren't competitive enough. After internal review time, as an hourly employee you won't see an increase of more than $1.00/hour. Staff turnover is still very much a problem -- typical for this industry -- although senior leadership have made attempts to address it in the last year, with some positive inroads.

Avantages

The mission is deeply meaningful and the reason I wake up every morning. As an animal lover, helping save dogs and cats provides a strong sense of purpose.

Inconvénients

-Workplace culture is very cliquey, it feels more like a high school than a professional working enviornment. There's a noticeable in-group/out-group dynamic that leads to unnecessary tension and awkwardness. -Staff turnover is high across all departments. This makes it hard to feel like part of a cohesive team, and results in the loss of historical knowledge and processes. -There is a pervasive aura of negativity. It's not uncommon to hear other staff and volunteers complain about leadership decisions, workload, and more in shared spaces or even in front of the public. -Communication between departments is terrible, leading to confusion, inefficiencies, and frustration. Gathering information from other departments is like pulling teeth in slow motion.
