Avantages

Several sales and management regimes ago, you were free to pitch your own story ideas, and to pursue the writing tone and story angle you wished. They gave early-career journalists freedom and leash they'd be hard-pressed to get at traditional outlets and bigger papers. It was excellent longform training for so many talented reporters and writers who've gone onto bigger things.

Inconvénients

The sorry pay, nonexistent raises, and constant budget cuts that made the morale sink into oblivion.

Avantages

I met a few great colleagues that I have and will keep in contact with. A lifetime of 'do you remember' jokes about the ridiculous employment.

Inconvénients

Zero leadership. I watched AE's drop like flies. The Associate Publisher would offer to make calls with them and that was the only 'guidance'. Management also spent more time on their own accounts than they did helping AE's succeed which was actually their job. 'Over 50% of the sales team was fired in a 6 month time period. 2 left for other reasons but the email that was sent out was the same of people who were fired. Management gossiped about other management in front of employees and with employees. Having a car is mandatory but they only pay for half of your monthly garage fee at work. Management never gave positive feedback - after handing in 1 contract you will hear "is that all?" Nope - here's another. "Ok". Official hours are 8-6. They pay 35k minus monthly garage fees and half your health insurance which is deducted from your paycheck. Most of the sales team is abrasive and unfriendly - there are definite cliques (there are roughly 8 people on the entire sales team).
