Avantages

A beautiful environment, that is unique. I remember Roke from an earlier stint in my career, and it was an incredible place to work: full of world-class people, mutual respect everywhere, and ground-breaking work wherever you looked. There are still some truly world-class engineers, who are incredible to be around and learn from, though they are far fewer in number now. There are pockets of amazingness, if you know where to look. The benefits are decent. If you're prepared to quietly keep your head down and maintain a low profile, you will probably enjoy your job.

Inconvénients

Your experience largely depends on which business unit you are in but, in general, the senior management are atrocious. There are ever-increasing numbers of people with non-jobs, who create meaningless process because they seem to have nothing else to do. It's standard practice to have meetings with 1 engineer and 8 managers, with everything delegated to the poor engineer because everyone else appears incapable of adding any value. You only have to glance at the state of the company organisation chart, to realise something is quite wrong. Some of the engineers are at breaking point, working 60+ hour weeks to look after the business, whilst having rocks thrown at them. When people complain that they are overstretched, the solution seems to be to recruit yet more managers. The normal state of affairs is to be fighting fires. The company makes a big thing out of good professional behaviours, and yet some of the senior managers in the business show appalling behaviours. It feels like everyone is afraid of their boss, and problems are hidden or contained locally, to avoid appearing incompetent to your superior. There's a very military style of command, where orders come from the top, and must not be questioned. I guess, like many businesses, it depends where you sit in the organisation. If you're a junior software engineer, you will probably have an enjoyable time: come in, do some coding, enjoy the free coffee, go home. If you have higher levels of responsibility in the business you quickly become exposed to a lot of farcical nonsense.

Transition from contract to permanent can take some adjustment. Lots of interesting work available, which can make it hard to choose what to get involved in.

Avantages

Having spent nearly four years at Roke, I can truly say it is one of the best companies I have worked for. I am incredibly proud of our work and feel privileged to work with such talented individuals whose innovative work I cannot even begin to understand. Of course, like any business, we have had both good and bad days, but I can honestly say that Roke care about their employees and provide a lot of support when needed, as I have experienced myself recently. While there are some areas for improvement, I have nothing but positive to say about Roke. It is all about your personal outlook on life and appreciation. It can be challenging as is every business, but I feel like I am here for the long haul and I am excited about what is to come.

Inconvénients

Career progression and L&D feels limited at the moment, however, I’m aware that new career pathways are being developed which is encouraging
